Spices A to Z: Z

Earthy. Tangy. Nutty. A Middle Eastern classic. Zahtar, also commonly spelled Za’atar, is a traditional Middle Eastern seasoning combining aromatic thyme, tangy sumac, nutty sesame seeds and salt.

Its savory, herbaceous flavor makes Zahtar one of those wonderfully simple seasonings that can be used almost anywhere. Mix it with olive oil for a classic bread dip, sprinkle it over warm flatbread, or use it to add Middle Eastern flavor to meats, vegetables, eggs and dips.

Ways to Use Zahtar

• Mix with olive oil and serve with warm bread
• Sprinkle over flatbread, pita or pizza
• Season chicken, lamb, fish or roasted vegetables
• Add to hummus or labneh
• Sprinkle over eggs, avocado toast or potatoes
• Stir into olive oil for an easy marinade
